Rafting on the Yangtze River

overview

The third longest river in the world, the Yangtze flows through 11 provinces until it reaches the East China Sea. It has a 5,400 m of drop in elevation along its course. Its tributaries are the Totohe River, which is 383 km long, and the Tongtianhe River, 823 km long. Part of the Yangtze is perfect for rafting.

The best season for rafting is from June to September.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 01 Flight to Peking

Day 02 Peking - Xining flight CA1207 0740/0955 1N Qinghai Hotel ¥¥¥¥

Day 03 Drive 180 km to Qinghai Lake via Kumbum Monastery, acc. in Tent Hotel ¥¥

After breakfast, we drive to visit Kumbum monastery (Ta'er Si) of Gelukpa-se ct ,which was built in 1560 and is one of the six grand monasteries in Tibet. Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Lamaistic "yellow hat sect", was born here. As Kumbum-monastery has always been playing an important role to connect the Mongolian with the Lamaism, today many Tibetans and Mongolian s come to this place for worship. Then we drive westward a cross Huangyuan,an important town in ancient time.Then over Sun-and-Moon mountain (Ri Yue Shan). In 641 Wencheng princess of Tang Dynasty passed by this mountain where today a sun-pavilion and a moon-pavilion are built on the summit for people to have a break. The Sun-and-Moon mountain has always been an distinguish line between meadow and agriculture area. After that make a short trekking by the Koko Nor lake, the biggest salty lake in China, with an area of 4,500 square kilometers and an altitude of 3,194m high above sea level. The big lake is acclaimed as "pearl on the highland" and the scenery of which is unusually fascinating and appears different shapes even at the same time. "Koko Nor" in Mongolian language means "blue lake" because of the lunar shape and the color of the lake.

Day 04 Drive 460 km to Madoi, acc. in hostel

Madoi is a small town with a population of 10,000 people among them are mostly Tibetans.People always say that never to live in Madoi because most of the people who lived there felt a severe headache for its high altitude.

Day 05 Drive 400 km to Chumarleb, going over Bayankala Pass, acc. in hostel

The capital of Chumarleb County is situated at Serpo Lungpa,which is a small town and the main inhabitants are Tibetans there.Hui Muslims come to this town to collect wool and sheep in order to transport them to Xining.There are a few simple restaurants in the town.

Day 06/09 Rafting 330 km on Yangtze from Chumarleb to Zhimenda, camping

Day 10 Drive 80 km to Jyekundo (Yushu), visit Jyekundo Monastery, acc. in Yushu Hotel

Jyekundo means 'a confluence of all attributes'.It got its name from Jyekundo Dondrubling Monastery which is on the top of the hill to the northeast of the town.Jyekundo,3,700m above sea level, is a busy town for it is the capital of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Many Han Chinses,Hui Muslims and Tibetans are doing business there.The traditional Horse-back Racing Festival is held yearly on the grassland west of the town,thousands of people come here to enjoy the event.

Day 11 Drive 330 km to Madoi, acc.in hostel

Day 12 Drive 500 km back to Xining, acc. in Qinghai Hotel

Day 13 Fly to Beijing, acc. in Rainbow Hotel

Day 14 Fly home

Day 15 Drive 400 km to Chengdu, acc. in Chengdu Hotel

Day 16 Fly to Beijing, overnight in the 4*Hotel.
